Ethical and Political Implications of Thomas Piketty's Work on Economic Inequality
Miledova, Linda ; Salamon, Janusz (advisor) ; Benáček, Vladimír (referee)
French Economist Thomas Piketty, through a study of history and empirical data from different cultures and generations, argues that economic inequality, today, is not a natural outcome of the free market but has deeper roots. Piketty, indeed, asserts, through his extensive analysis of political systems and ideologies, that the trajectory of income inequality depends heavily on the power exercised by the state and other politically-motivated groups that aim to execute their personal agendas at the cost of the rest of society, namely, middle and lower classes. A historical and comparative analysis between various nations and how they justified inequalities in their governments shows that these gaps are politically driven. The results of a colonial eras and the wars are pure proof that inequalities are intentional and certain groups make sure that some countries and classes suffer from poverty for further control and power. Piketty claims that this status quo has become unsustainable and that global legislative changes ought to be implemented to reduce the gap between the rich minorities and lower classes. The French author proposes a progressive wealth tax that would impose higher taxes on wealthier individuals with capitals and assets. The revenues from these taxes will be used to better public...
Decrease of Electoral Preferences of ČSSD after the Chamber of Deputies' Elections in 2017
Telerovský, Hynek ; Stauber, Jakub (advisor) ; Perottino, Michel (referee)
The bachelor thesis is concerned with the Czech Social Democratic Party and focuses on the election failures of the party in the last two decades. The main objective is to answer the question: What caused the electoral decline of one of the most influential political parties in the Czech Republic? The author identifies potential sources of such a decline. In the theoretical part, he discusses the problems of social democracies on the European continent in the context of the global financial crisis of 2008, which he sees as one of the general factors behind the decline of these parties. In the case of CSSD, the author adds the failed attempt to modernize CSSD, which may have contributed to its decline. In the practical part, both factors are examined in more detail with a specific focus on the CSSD. Using the method of synchronic comparison, the author compares the changes in the electoral success of individual social democratic parliamentary parties in the period 2010-2021. The second factor, concerning the electoral performance of the CSSD after the party's modernization, is examined in the context of the movement of voters and the emergence of new political parties based on the analysis of sociological data. The results confirm the author's assumption that the increasing electoral decline of the...
Pasokification - the decline of traditional and social democratic parties after the Great Recession
Ročárek, Adam ; Stauber, Jakub (advisor) ; Perottino, Michel (referee)
This bachelor's thesis is concerned with Pasokification, a concurrent decline of traditional centre-left parties in Europe and rise of alternative parties after the Great Recession of 2008. The theoretic part of the thesis analyses the status of these parties prior to their decline, their politics, way of governing, evolution and reforms which the parties embraced prior to their decline. The practical part analyses the decline itself, and how its tied to parties' politics and decisions prior to it. It also analyses the new, alternative parties, which have begun to occupy the space previously dominated by moderate, traditional parties. By comparison between the parties that successfully staved off Pasokification, and parties that declined into political irrelevance, and by comparison between the traditional and alternative parties, this thesis pinpoints the reasons for the decline. By analysing the electoral successes of the traditional and alternative parties, the thesis resolves the relationship between the two, discovering whether the rise of alternative parties is the reason for the decline, or a result of it. The same hypotheses are used for the 6 analysed states, and as such the thesis analyses whether the hypotheses are applicable to the wide trend of the European left.

Hanuš, Karel ; Šubrt, Jiří (advisor) ; Keller, Jan (referee) ; Veselý, Arnošt (referee)
In the long term the issue of the welfare state is one of the most debated political topics and it concerns almost all members of society. In the last few decades the advanced welfare state has been more frequently perceived as an obstacle for competitiveness in the globalized economy and issues of its economic sustainability and societal impact are widely debated. Sweden is generally considered to be a country with the most advanced model of welfare state, but it is also a country which suffered from a deep economic crisis in the early 1990s. Development of the Swedish model of welfare state in the context of the crisis presents a critical case for assessment of welfare state vitality. In this thesis, welfare state is defined as a multidimensional phenomenon that includes both social expenditures and institutions of social policy and power structures and legitimacy. For analyzing of transformations of the Swedish welfare state in all four dimensions is applied a theoretical perspective based on the power resources theory, the institutional approach, the transnational perspective, the dependency and the world-systems theory which whose complementarity is theoretically substantiated. The thesis with this approach should contribute to better understanding of the development of the welfare state in...
